Enjoy the moment
Heaven knows what problems and disappointments lie ahead. But for now, it's enough to savour the moment. To know that the man in the White House for the next few years is an internationalist, a progressive, and a consensus-builder. To see what a huge step America has taken to overcome its lingering racism.
It's enough to see the end of cowboy politics, at least for now. To see the back of Dubya and Dick and Rumsfeld and Rove, and the shame and disgrace they have brought upon America. To see the end of a man who spent eight presidential years working through private traumas concerning his father. To have avoided the possibility of a President Palin. To move away from the politics of aggression, belligerence, arrogance and pugnacity.
That's more than enough for one sun-soaked morning. Enjoy the moment while it lasts.

Jeremy, my dear, whilst on these shores not exactly sun soaked (and only half baked for that matter) I most certainly enjoyed the moment. As Vernon, amonst many others, pointed out to me McCain was most gracious in defeat. No bitter, tart note. Palin, of course, was to be avoided at all cost. How cold is Alaska?
Sweet Obama; his demeanour is one of such quiet confidence, such calm I am in awe. I wish the guy luck with all my heart.
Though good Michelle needs a fashion advisor. What on earth was she thinking of wearing that awful black red ensemble focussing on the wrong part of her body for the night? Sorry, Jeremy, I know your blog is not a side kick of Vogue, but still.
In her defence, can you imagine going to bed with the President Elect of the United States? As kicks go ...

Hello, Jeremy!
Thank you for more posts! I got nervous that you had stopped for such a long time. So, I had a few moments of relief before the election, while reading your autumn posts. And, frankly, the collective joy and relief since election night seems tempered. But I am only experiencing reality in a smallish city in the u. s.--Minneapolis,MN. Yes, we are the sister/twin to St.Paul of RNC 2008 infamy.
Last Saturday went to a free screening at our neighborhood theatre of the just-released DVD of "Suppressing Dissent", which is mostly video footage taken during Minneapolis and St. Paul city police brutalities against protesters against the RNC. The DVD is about two hours long and imparts a vertiginous feeling at times. It is available to view on line, I believe; produced by the Glass Bead Collective. Some of the folks in the DVD are neighbors, fellow activists, former playmates of my older daughter, protesters from other parts of the world, progressive icons in the media world...
Definitely, in my view, this will be the best-looking first family we've ever had in the white house. And, as I've been saying for some time, if Barack Hussein Obama is truly willing and begins to do the real work that needs to be done--which is to stop wars and rise up with all the economically poor people of the planet to heal our Mother and ourselves, which means undoing capitalism and completely weaning our complexes from petro-chemical and nuclear power--then he gets my vote and support. In the meantime, I voted fro Cynthia McKinney and got voters' rights info out to a few hundred people.
One last bit. After depositing my first real paycheck of substance in three years, I've spent a little of it on books from May Day books, a socialist bookshop in Mpls. I picked one, somewhat randomly, because of its title and cover, called "Capitalism and Slavery". Brought it home to discover it was written by a fellow countryman/former p. m. of yours and is a classic--which, of course, I'm only now learning about. Education in the u. s. is very slanted.
Peace Solidarity and Hope!
Stefanie
P. S. I'm not sure if this went through the first time. Apologies if you receive it twice.
